Colorado ACTS Presents: I Never Saw Another Butterfly

Over 15,000 Jewish children passed through Terezin, and only about a hundred were still alive when Terezin was liberated at the end of the war. One of the survivors, Raja, having lived through it all, teaching the children when there was nothing to teach with, helping to give them hope when there was little enough reason for hope, creating a little world of laughter, of flowers and butterflies behind the barbed wire, tells the true story of the children. It’s her play and it’s theirs. There were no butterflies at Terezin, of course, but for the children, butterflies became a symbol of defiance, making it possible for them to live on and play happily while waiting to be transported. Come enjoy this emotional and powerful production commemorating these precious lives lost.

Performance: February 24 and 25, March 2 and 3
All shows at 7:00pm

Tickets: $6 per person, $5 for students and seniors

We will do everything we can to make this transition as smooth as possible for our students and families. Because of this move, it is absolutely pertinent that you register your student for the class they want to take on our website (www.coloradoacts.org). If your student is not registered we will not be able to contact you with information regarding meeting location and time. Thanks for your understanding and flexibility during this time of transition. We greatly appreciate it.

After-School & Evening Classes:

A Pirate’s Life for Me: A Musical

  • Ages: 12-18

Description:  Aristocrat Roger Goodman has his heart set on a conventional life married to the wealthy Sarah Huffington and living happily ever after.  That is, until he finds out she thinks he’s boring and would rather marry a brave and adventurous pirate!  Determined to prove himself to his beloved, Roger hires Long John Sliver to tutor him and his newly recruited motley crew in the field of piracy.  In exchange for his total pirate makeover, Roger and his crew sail to Treasure Island seeking the chests of gold doubloons Long John buried there. Meanwhile, Sarah knows there’s only one way to win the affections of a true pirate.  She dubs herself the Pirate Queen and sets sail with her own crew of lady pirates.  With messages in bottles that spread rumors, Captain Blood and the Pirate Queen learn of each other’s formidable reputations, not knowing, of course, each other’s true identity.  When Sarah gets the message that Captain Blood is holding her parents captive on Treasure Island, you can guess where the lady pirates are headed next!  Treasure Island is soon swimming with retired pirates, lady pirates and other pirate wannabes, including one character who thinks he’s a parrot.  It’s not a pirate convention; it’s a game of hide-and-seek!

Jack and the Beanstalk

  • Ages: 8-12

Description: This entertaining version of Jack and the Beanstalk returns to the original English source, The History of Jack and the Enchanted Beans.  All the familiar characters are here:  The dancing cow, the magic bean-seller, the hysterical chicken, the singing harp and the Giant.  The Giant is a horrible person.  He even locks up the kingdom’s ruler.  When Jack sells the cow for those magic beans the fun really begins.  Jack goes up the beanstalk and into the castle where he fights the Giant. In the end the cow is returned, the chicken learns how to lay golden eggs and the good life returns to the kingdom — thanks to Jack.

Bully Goats Griff

A Touring Performance

  • Ages: 8-18

Description: With a tweak and a twist, the children’s tale of the Billy Goats Gruff has become the perfect tool to teach elementary audiences about bullying. The two toll trolls who are bickering on a bridge have a “falling out” after Billy, the smallest of the three goats, decides to become a “bully goat.”  As if paying a toll to get across the bridge wasn’t bad enough, now anyone who dares to trip-trap over the bridge gets knocked off by Billy.  At first it seems funny, but the unfairness of Billy’s bullying becomes apparent when victims keep getting pushed off the bridge.  In the end, a gang of mis-matched victims pull together to teach Billy a lesson.  Children of all ages will love the silly characters and non-stop action in this show. Beyond the silliness, an important lesson is learned.
School Performances: This is a “travelling” show that will visit several different schools with their production. Students and Parents will be advised of specific dates when they become available in January. Tentatively, Performances will be held the Last Week of April- The Second Week in May.

Grant Writing Opportunity

Dear Friends at Colorado ACTS:

I have been writing grants for nonprofit organizations since 2002, and have worked in various aspects of nonprofits for 17 years.  I have learned that grant proposals are an essential part of any fundraising endeavor.  The process of researching and learning the preferences of foundations, conducting research for the proposal, writing the proposal, gathering the attachments, and following up with the foundations takes skill, experience, time and effort.

This is what I am willing to provide.

My charge is $55 per hour.  I cannot guarantee a certain amount of money will come into your organization because funding is dependent on many factors, including the viability of your project and whether funders to whom we apply choose to grant the money requested.  However, I promise you that I will bring all of my expertise, passion and experience to each proposal that I research and write for you.

My track record is solid.  In the six years I wrote for Open Door Ministries (www.odmdenver.org), an average of $80,000 per year was provided by grants.  Since January 2008, I have written for Restoration Outreach Programs (www.restorationoutreachprograms.org).  In 2008, we brought in 13% of the annual budget through grants, in addition to completing a capital project.  In 2009 & 2010, ROP received an average of $60,000 through foundation grants (smaller budget than Open Door).

Overall, most of my clients receive $10 for every $1 they spend on my services.

I have also written for other Denver-based nonprofits. I specialize in smaller organizations and have experience with Christian, as well as secular programs.

Sincerely

Lara Allen
